I love when a plan comes together.  And today’s cake is an example of just that. This lovely cake is the beautiful work of Kristin from Fat Girl Cakes in Fredericksburg, Virginia.  Kristin tells me that the bride for this wedding wasn’t quite sure what she would like in terms of a cake.  When they met, Kristin flipped through a book of cakes for inspiration, and the bride mentioned that she loved one of the display cakes as well.  She seemed to gravitate toward cakes that featured bright colors…and that’s all Kristin needed to get the creative ball rolling here. So…where does th...

When I saw this cake, I knew I had to feature it. We are not strangers to Intricate Icings – we love their work!  It’s always so meticulous and, well, interesting.  So often, I’ll spy a cake I love, and won’t be surprised that it’s the work of this awesome Colorado bakery. This cake is no exception.  I think two things drew it to me:  first, the richness of the purple.  To me, purple – or really, any deep, strong color – must be treated carefully when it comes to cake.  One false move…one tint or shade the wrong way…and you have MESS ...

You had me at pate de fruit.  No.  Seriously. Because we love love LOVE! the sweet and pretty around here, we spend an inordinate amount of time gazing at pretty cakes.  Sometimes we tire of our usual haunts and look for fresh perspective. That’s how I found this cake and accompanying sweets table, which maybe made me jump up and down, clapping, like a little school girl.  Just a little. I love this simple dessert table.  No, the from-scratch cannoli, wedding cookies, truffles, and pate de fruit weren’t simple to make by any stretch.  But there isn’t any, well, clutter....

I know that when it comes to wedding colours, we have always advised you to pick something vivid that would bring everything to life. But, the truth is, that in term of the wedding cakes, we really appreciate the black and white ones. Such culinary items are very popular at weddings, because they are elegant and full of glamour, which makes them suitable for very type of nuptials. However, there is something more about black and white cakes; something magical that takes over the entire atmosphere and makes all the wedding attendants focus only on the beauty of these cakes. Today, we show another installment in the “all white done right” category. Jenniffer from Cupadee Cakes consistently turns out beautiful cakes.  This one is no exception.  Four tiers of white buttercream.  Three of the tiers feature a wide piped border, reminiscent in detail of exquisite crown moulding.  Different components make up the border, a combination of fleur-de-lis-like swirls and dots.  On the third layer, Jenniffer fashioned a bow and anchored it with a brooch, both made of gumpaste.  The cake is simple and elegant, the lines are clean, and the overall effect is stunning. ...

Pretty spectacular, eh? I’m sure there is a prince or princess floating around this reception somewhere.  Or at least a socialite. I love when white on white is done right.  The detail of the piping, which features a fern motif, is heavy enough to capture the lights and shadows, which really makes it stand out.  The flower garnish, made up of pale hydrangeas and pink roses, fills in the spaces perfectly, giving the cake a cohesive look.  This cake is kind of old fashioned, in that it’s not stacked (and we predict a swing back to this practice, in the category of “everythi...

Ah, the elusive…green flower. The what? Yes. The green flower. Rare, and a little strange, but always beautiful. You can find green-hued flowers in varieties such as geraniums and orchids.  But wait, this isn’t a botany blog, is it? I love this cake.  My love of white on white cakes was discussed last month here and here.  And today, I find another example of a white on white cake, with just a little punch of unexpected color, via green flowers.  The simple mums encircle the base of the top tier of this three-layered beauty, providing a jolt of fresh color – a perfect contrast with t...

Blame it on the heat, or possibly overstimulation.  But lately, I’ve been craving posts about white wedding cakes. Color is fun, color is fab, and color will probably be the star of my next post.  But the other day, as I was writing a guest post for another loverly blog (more about that later!), I began to search our catalog of cakes for a white cake.  And I couldn’t find one. Now, there’s a lot of talk out there about “boring white wedding cakes.”  I suppose that, if you’re a baker and you’re stuck making white cake after white cake, that would get a little, you know, mind-n...
