I’m a tulle-loving girl. I think the netted fabric adds a little something to a dress – particularly a wedding gown – giving it the lift it needs and deserves. But, let’s face it, lovelies: the stuff itches. I have a black and white polka dot dress with a bright red sash (it’s quite fabulous) but I avoid wearing it because the bottom layer (bright red tulle!) is so dang itchy. And, if you sit in it all day it leaves marks on your legs. So, when I saw this tulle wedding ball gown I thought it looked lovely, but imagined the itchiness that would ensue. Ouch. Ever versatile tulle is used for making everything from full, gathered skirts to poufs on head pieces.Defined, tulle is a fine mesh netting with a hexagonal pattern that comes in silk or nylon. It's the standard material for bridal veils. It's also used in bouffant skirts like the one pictured above, proffering that ballerina look Vera Wang reinvented about twenty years back. While the big tulle skirt is classic, edgier versions of late suggest special effects like draping, ruching and pick-up treatments over more modified skirt silhouettes. Defined, tulle is that fine mesh netting with a hexagonal pattern that comes in silk, cotton, nylon or acrylic silk for power netting. Tulle, aka illusion, is familiar because its the standard material for bridal veils. Did you know it also comes in lighter versions and is used in bouffant skirts? The ones here give off that romantic look evoking ballerinas and Boho princesses. Above ... |
