Last weekend I visited the adorable Chicago floral shop Fleur and learned to build a beautiful and simple terrarium!  Terrariums are perfect housewarming or hostess gifts, or easy create-ahead centerpieces.  They are simpler to make than you think, and (bonus!) they last a long time and require little attention.  Follow along below or view the printable instructions here. You will need: glass vase or mason jar gravel, small pebbles and coarse sand soil charcoal that you would use in an aquarium a plant! You can purchase small plants as well as gravel, pebbles, sand, and soil at you...

  • If you’re dreaming of a modern celebration with a minimalist feel, today’s Eye Candy will delight the senses. Terrariums—tiny, gorgeous gardens covered in glass—serve up the perfect amount of fresh charm for tabletops. These are a few of my favorite looks from around the web. Aren’t they lovely? Terrarium Centerpieces: Eye Candy...

  • I am the first to admit my thumbs are not green. Yes, I once killed a cactus plant by overwatering the darn thing! I think that’s why I’ve always been intrigued by terrariums, which seem to grow with very little effort and look so chic in a modern apartment. Typically, I believe flowers should take center stage in your wedding décor, but after seeing these brilliantly designed terrariums, I may be persuaded. For the bride who wants to make an environmental statement, these lovelies will certainly fit the bill for a green wedding. They are so exquisite that I may try my luck again to see i...

Photo: Courtesy of Steven Bruce Design A dose of pretty for your day: I love the sweet, garden-y sensibility of this springtime bouquet and centerpiece, both created by Steven Bruce Design. The bouquet includes freesias, stock, dusty miller, jasmine vines, raspberries, green brunia, lisianthuses, scented geranium, ranunculuses, waxflower, roses, tulips, succulents, and calla lilies, tied together with wool yarn. (I think the design would look particularly fetching with one of the gowns in Anthropologie's new BHLDN line.) The mini terrarium centerpiece features moss, rock shards, lisi...

Flowers are one, if not two things 1) expensive and/or 2) a DIY challenge…at least in my humble opinion.  And honestly, there aren’t a whole lot of bright floral colors happening in the Pacific NW in January anyhow. This is why we have opted for flower minimalism, especially when decorating our 18 or so tables!  My inspiration is this: {Photo via Wedding Bee Boards} I plan to have a single cylindrical vase on each table; which you can purchase in bulk from The Dollar Tree for, yes, $1 each!!!. I was thinking of renting vases or purchasing them for anywhere between $7-$10 each, but f...

When I was trying to figure out my centerpieces, my florist gave me a low cost option. But I wasn’t too thrilled about it. I knew it would be inexpensive (about $130 for 20 tables TOTAL) but it would just be a low bowl with floating candles and 2 gerber daisies floating in the water. So I researched online for ideas and came up with something I am pretty excited about. I am going to create 4 paper flowers (1 green, 1 pink, and 2 white) and put them in tall vases with water beads. Are your centerpieces a floral alternative? Personal Photo Personal Photo...

Our beautiful centerpieces were yellow and white roses, by Anthony Brownie. The tables were also adorned with old books that belonged to my late grandfather. Tables were covered with white lace overlays and dishes inscribed with The Harvard Club logo....

I love this series on unique centerpieces by With This Ring--especially this clever, inexpensive with with candles and a few peonies!...

  • Good morning lovelies – today we’re discussing terrariums for weddings! What’s a terrarium, you ask? A terrarium is a collection of small plants growing in a transparent, sealed container. It’s sort of a mini, DIY eco-system filled with nature-inspired finds. Terrariums for wedding centerpieces has become a popular decor choice for rustic weddings. Terrariums use natural, eco-friendly materials and are handmade easily. My favorite part? Terrariums can be made weeks before the wedding and still look perfect, since they do not require much care. This means you won’t be running ...

People always ask me how I choose the weddings and ideas that I write about on Style Me Pretty. The truth is, it happens way more organically than many people realize. I usually start thinking about the next day’s posts at night, though I don’t solidify anything until the morning that it goes live. And oftentimes, I don’t have anything at all planned for the day when I wake up in the morning. Which was exactly the case today. I am still playing catch-up from being away and real weddings are starting to pile up in my inbox. So many gorgeous real weddings, so many incredible ideas. As I wa...
