Usually it is put on your hands or feet and can last for a couple weeks. The History of Mehndi If you have ever been to an Indian wedding you have probably seen brides wearing the “henna tattoos”. Mehndi is a timeless tradition that goes way back. In the Indian culture it is an important ritual that symbolizes beauty and is acquired for all ceremonial occasions, such as weddings. The Q: I am marrying a wonderful man this winter.  He is Indian and I am not.  We’ve been very excited about fusing our two cultures and are having a traditional Hindu ceremony one day followed by a Catholic ceremony the next.  Everything has been going really smoothly and our families couldn’t be more delighted.  Which is why I feel incredibly stupid  that the one thing that I’m REALLY freaking out about is the Mehndi party.  My in laws have been so incredibly generous buying me saris and gorgeous jewelry for all of the Indian wedding festivities, but the idea of the Mehndi with m...

I really love the artistry of henna. The skill is so impressive and it looks so cool! Here are a few fun photos from a Mehndi party for one of my recent Hindu-American weddings.  I am loving the contrast of the henna feet in the wedding shoes! The ladies check out the henna design book! My favorite part of the bride's design was the groom's name hidden within the designs on her hands. It was tricky to find but I love the sweet symbolism! The bridesmaids show off their hands! • Many cultures around the world celebrate the rites of marriage in beautiful ways. One of the most beautiful rites for countries like India, Pakistan, and other Asian and some Middle Eastern countries involves adorning the bride’s hands and feet with Mehndi. Mehndi {henna} is applied as a paste in the most beautiful and intricate patterns on the brides hands and feet. The design details can be simple or elaborate, and vary from country to country. After the Mehndi is applied the hands and feet are sometimes wrapped for a few hours to increase the intensity of the henna’s color. The gorgeous...

I was so excited when I got this order. Jennifer is having two ceremonies - a Mehndi sunrise service and then later in the day, a traditional service and reception. Although I didn't do the Indian wedding invitations, she wanted the invitations to be very Mehndi in their inspiration. She fell in love with two graphics - these love birds (she will actually have love birds printed in henna on her hands at the ceremony) and this very modern lotus graphic. But another interesting element is the "a" in their names. Jennifer loved the look of the movie poster for Namesake. She wanted a similar...

Eastern wedding traditions involve the decoration of the bride's hands and feet - in many cultures on both the front and back of the hands right up to the elbow (similar to gloves), and on the bottom half of the legs. Sometimes the bride and groom’s names are hidden in the design, and they don’t get to Lover’s Lane (wedding night) until the groom finds both names. (Marry a good speller.) Henna is a natural product and its leaves are dried and grounded up to make henna powder. A good dark design is a sign of good luck. A henna bridal design should last between 1 and 4 weeks, depending on ...
