• Hurricane season was a consideration very early on in determining our wedding date and location. We decided to risk it when we chose our location along the coast in the peak of hurricane season. My family has vacationed along the Outer Banks for 26 years, and we were only evacuated for a hurricane one time, for Hurricane Bob. The last few days, have been full of news on the action in the Atlantic. Our wedding is next weekend (10 days away), and that red dot (Gaston?)  in the lower right is really starting to make me nervous. http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/ We do have backup plans in case of rain, ho...

  • Well….it’s official, forecasters have predicted an active hurricane season with above-normal threats on the U.S. coastline.  Great, just what I wanted to hear.   They are suggesting 16 to 18 tropical storms in total, 15 of which will likely be in the western Atlantic or Gulf of Mexico.  (In a typical season, there are about 11 named storms, with only two or three impacting the coast of the US)  Well, lucky for us, we have a back up plan, or “Force Majeure” for those who speak lawyer.  This allows us to postpone the wedding for another weekend, or receive a full refund.  All t...

After months of preparation, everything was set: the wedding would be on Saturday, August 27 at the Bronx Zoo. The ceremony and cocktails would be outdoors, and the party would move inside for dinner and dancing.  But, no one had planned for a hurricane. All day Friday while arranging the 80+ centerpieces, Ruth and I were getting frantic updates about Hurricane Irene. Despite the news, we continued to work, in hopes that the wedding would happen as planned.Around 3pm on Friday, Leslie, owner of Sage Events, calledto give us the bad news-- the Zoo canceled, deciding to closes its doors...

Vermont has been hit hard by mother nature. Some are saying that this has been the worst disaster in Vermont’s history. My family and I live in the village of Woodstock one of the hardest hit areas. We were extremely fortunate that hurricane Irene did not damage our home. Other than a few minor inconveniences, no power, means of communication to reach the outside world and water, we are safe. In the last few days we have heard several stories of simple acts of kindness, our elementary school opened on Sunday to care for 40 families who lost their homes, a car passing by a home on fire, went ...

  • For the past 2 years or so, I’ve had my mind set on getting married in September (yes, since before I was engaged). September is a gorgeous month in D.C. – the summer heat has passed but the chill of fall has not yet set in. The only issue with September is hurricanes. Now I know I do not live on the coast, but as you all know, whenever a hurricane hits the coastline, we all get soaked! This hurricane season reminded me to panic about the weather on my wedding day!! There are of course more important things to worry about and I know I can do nothing about this, but I really hope hurricane ...

  • Many couples who plan a beautiful summer wedding are dismayed to learn that their wedding also falls during hurricane season. This week we’ll be introducing you to some great destinations where hurricanes are less likely to ruin your plans....

Hey ladybugs! Sorry for the radio silence last week. We were without power for most of it thanks to Irene, who nearly caused us to re-imagine and relocate my baby shower due to power outages and general havoc. But the shower prevailed and went on as planned. Power came back to hostess Emily’s house just in the nick of time and we were able to celebrate baby girl Connally, who we’re expecting in early October. Here are a few snaps from the weekend.   It was a late afternoon party, so my friends served small bites — tea sandwiches, cake, to-die-for macarons from Petites Bouchées, yummy...
