Filed under: Keeping the MemoryWhen it's a quilt. Or a plate or platter. Or a tablecloth, signed in fabric markers with your guests' best wishes. We've occasionally highlighted various alternatives to the guest book, so we decided it was time to pull the various suggestions together, and maybe think of a few more. There's nothing wrong with the standard guest book, of course. You may have a lovely one already purchased, and you're looking forward to seeing filled with the names of the people you care most about. But maybe you want something a little different. • We purchased our guest book on Saturday and I realized that the guest book isn’t really something people talk about very often. Photo Credit: Squidoo My mother-in-law to be and I were talking about the guest book and I mentioned that no one really sees the front of it. She said something that stuck with me, she told me that the guest book will stay open the whole day but it will be with us for the rest of our married lives. So the guest book is for us. It should be a cover that we like because the guests won’t really care what it looks like. Photo Credit: Gifts and Goodies There are...

  • (image copyright Amy Carroll Photography) This photo is from the May wedding of my dear friend Becky. She had me so excited about borrowing her grandparent's vintage typewriter, that I blogged about it last Fall. The reason this worked so well? a.) she's an editor and b.) the reception venue was an old mansion, and it went perfectly with the entire event design. While this is still my all-time favorite guest book, I wanted to share with you the other ones that aren't run-of-the-mill. The signature matte. I realize a lot of couples go this route, but it's a great keepsake. Even if it ends up in...

  • Something else we’ve been working on this month is the guest book.  We knew we wanted a photo book because we wanted it to be something that we would actually look at again.  However, I’m a little shy and I really did not want a book with just photographs of us.  I knew that would make me self-conscious.  So we decided to do a photo book which was a mixture of our engagement photographs and photos of our family and friends. We used blurb.com to make the book.  You have to download their software before you can begin working on the book.  The software was pretty easy to use, but it d...

pottery barn-ish visionclose-upanother pottery barn framei bought an oversized black and white frame, similar to the top one on this post about two years ago. mine's a little taller. i bought it with the intention of using it as a guest book at our wedding. and then, it seemed to become a craze of sorts. i was seeing them everywhere and started re-thinking having it as my guest book. the craze has seemed to die down a bit and i think i'll go with it. i like the idea of having it over dining buffet, surrounded by wine and good spirits. ;o) ...

Guest Book Idea: For a smaller wedding, place cherished guest photos (like your grandparents' wedding photo) in an album and have them sign on the page with their picture. It takes a little work ahead of time, but will be well worth it as a keepsake....

Our "guest book" was a vintage typewriter that instructed guests to write us a note to open on our 5th anniversary. They sealed notes in vintage airmail envelopes that had been decorated with vintage stamps, all thematically having to do with my husband or I (airplanes, writers, etc.). Envelopes were then placed in an old pencil case that had belonged to my father as a child....

  • A bit ago I posted about my alternative to the traditional guest book here.  I picked up the finished product last week.  A co-worker made it for free.  All I had to do was purchase the 16×20 canvas.  I got it for less than $10 at a local store.  Similar items are being sold for close to $100 on etsy…so I was pleased to spend so little. Our TREE Now I just need to purchase assorted green ink pads and fine point black Sharpies for our guests to leave their mark.  I think it will be different and something my fiance and I can hang on our wall to remember our special day. ...
