Groom's Cake Idea: (a small variation on Martha Stewart's): I love the idea of a groom's cake, but I never really knew what to do with it. Because it's usually small, do you serve it to the guests in tiny pieces along with your other cake? Or do you have a sheet cake in the back? I love the idea of giving out a "tasting portion" boxed in little white favor boxes. Have waiters bring out these elaborate trays of boxes with the dessert.... |

The tradition of the groom's cake can be traced back to the Victorian era in England, when, in addition to the main wedding cake, there was also a groom's cake and a smaller bride's cake. At the end of the wedding, the two cakes were sliced and served to the groomsmen and bridesmaids. The groom's cake eventually made its way to the United States, and its popularity has endured, especially in the South. The grooms cake was originally a southern wedding tradition. However, lately it seems the tradition is being used by just about everyone planning a wedding. The idea is wonderful, I think. Way back when, the grooms cake was a fruit cake ( please hold the groans) and was taken home by the unmarried female guests. Supposedly, the ladies would wrap the pieces up and place them under their pillows and dream of their future husband. Traditionally, the brides orders the cake but would design it based on her future husbands personality. In more modern times, the groom takes part in designing his cake... |
Whenever I think about Groom's cakes I immediately think of that hilarious scene from Steel Magnolias where Shirley MacLaine serves Tom Skerritt the butt of that hideously funny armadillo cake. I know that having a groom's cake isn't exactly necessary, but the previous post about golf got me thinking about them & basically I just think it would be really fun to have one! It seems that most "golf cakes" are done of golf bags like the ones above. But I also found a funky one:And one, which is my personal favorite, that looks like a golf ball:... |
The Groom’s cake has its roots in the South but is becoming more popular here in So Cal. It is intended to be a gift from the bride to the groom and is often chocolate or liquor-soaked. It’s customary for the groom’s cake to be displayed next to the bride’s cake and later cut and put into boxes for guests to take home. Legend has it that single women are supposed to sleep with a slice under their pillow the same night they receive it… and if they do, they’ll dream of their future husband. A current creative trend is to have the cake reflect the groom’s interests and hobbies. ... |

Photo by Ksenija Savic Photography The groom’s cake is a mysterious thing down here in Australia. We hear the term and the question is raised, what is a groom’s cake? The groom’s cake is a tradition hailing from Southern USA (though other sources tell me it’s from Europe). In the 1800’s, the wedding cake (a light cake) became known as the bride’s cake and thus the darker groom’s cake was born. Instead of the usual fruitcake or light coloured cake, the groom’s cake is usually a little more creative- something richer or darker like chocolate is the usual choice. It is also ofte... |
I’m sorry for not posting more treats this week, but it’s been very busy here…We recently had the opportunity to film a TV special for Martha Stewart’s The Art of Wedding Cakes II which will be airing on the Style Network on December 16th. They spent the day at Pink Cake Box and asked us to show off some of our groom’s cakes.
