There's nothing like a cabbage rose. Said to have more than 100 petals, cabbage roses were a favorite of Dutch painters. Most always a shade of pink, they have the loveliest scent (so lovely that rose oil is cultivated from them to make perfume).{picture 1 via real simple; pictures 2, 3 + 4 via Martha Stewart}... |
This 3 tier wedding cake with a cabbage rose bouquet was created (201) Bride magazine summer 2009 edition. From the magazine: Heap’s cake displays classic elegance. This sleek, rounded three-tiered cake is finished in rolled fondant and features a sophisticated gum past cabbage rose bouquet adorned with a satin bow. The lemon chiffon cake is filled with raspberry white chocolate mousse. Heap believes that matching the cake’s flowers to those used in bouquets is a popular trend. “Mimicking a bride’s gown and bouquet is a wonderful way to translate the bride’s style onto a cakeâ€... |
I just spoke to a florist who I am pretty sure I'll go with - she's incredibly nice and made some excellent suggestions. She was also the "preferred" florist recommended by The Abbey, and used the word "tater tot" in our conversation. Instant friends. Anyway, she said that unless I am prepared to pay out the nose for peonies, they're pretty much out of the question in September. Boo. But she suggested cabbage roses instead, as they have a similar large lush look to them (and she can get them in white). So I googled cabbage roses and found the picture above, which I love! I know that Gertrude Stein was convinced that 'a rose is a rose is a rose' but with the number of bouquets we've seen around here, it's pretty obvious that there are some big differences in them ;) Admittedly, I'm not actually a huge fan of the classic pitcher shaped red rose but I kept being completely drawn to these "peony-like" tightly wound roses with an outer petal structure that made them look like they were in a teacup. I think the obsession first started when they hit my radar in our Pastel Watercolor Wedding Inspiration blog. If you remember our blog po... |
This ornate four tier cake was created for a wedding this weekend in Philipsburg, NJ. The 1st and third tier is decorated in piping to match the wedding invite. The second tier has light champagne stenciling with a light gold cummerbund with sugar flowers. The bottom tier includes a quilted pattern with metallic (light yellow & rose gold) dots. The bottom tier is topped off with a fondant bow with a brooch and sugar flowers. Flavors included deep red velvet with raspberry chambord buttercream and chocolate ganache. This time of the year, delicate spring flowers become scarce, and we're left with colorful field flowers and dahlias. But if you're the type of girl who likes decadent-looking blossoms, there is only one way to go: my personal favorite, the garden rose. I have several preferred varietals, depending on the color palette of the wedding or function, and most of them have been created by David Austin. Since his first garden rose introduction in 1961, he has developed over 200 breeds. His family-owned company uses sustainable growing practices, and many of their roses are bred to have a five-day va... |
This garden rose wedding cake appeared in the June 2010 Brides magazine. We incorporated different shades of pink for the cascading roses. Each tier includes a white picket fence with additional cascading stems and leave in shades of spring green and celadon. ... |
Hi everyone! Have you ever wonder how they grow this enormous flower? They don’t! It is handmade! The florist starts with one single rose which is glued on a circular piece of styrofoam and then takes individual petals and hot glues them one by one to form one large flower. It is called a Glamelia (I think that is how to spell it ) and it is one of my favorite bouquets. Ask your florist if they have made one before…if not for your bouquet it looks great as a centerpiece or on cocktail tables.... |
