Vogue’s November Bridal issue has featured Real Women in their favourite sarees and they talk about their love affair with the six year wonder. It is interesting to note that most women featured in Vogue don’t pick their sarees from designers or multi-designer stores, but from old-as-gold stores that stock traditional sarees and whose wide collection suits every budget. In the article, craft revivalist Madhu Jain states: “I would love to own Indira Gandhi’s saree collection”. Her statement has a lot of meaning. Urban India is fascinated by the saree because its most powerful women ha... |

The Saree versus the Gown! Should our Indian Celebrities wear a Gown on the International Red Carpet? Or should they stick to the Saree? We spoke to three Indian designers. Nachiket Barve: I’m happy that Indian Celebrities, now global personalities wear Gowns. Style icons, make a successful transition when required and look good in whatever they wear. The ability to change, when required and not be stuck in a groove, is appreciable! James Ferreira: The ball gown is boring! And most Indian actresses make a fool of themselves by wearing it on the Red Carpet. Anupama Dayal: There’s so much s... |
This past weekend I learned about an amazing website: www.borrowitbindaas.com. One of the bridesmaids at my wedding had rented her saree from the site and it was beautiful! The site works pretty much like renttherunway.com where you rent a fabulous outfit for a fraction of the purchase price and then return it. This is perfect if you don't go to Indian weddings often but want to wear a saree or if you just don't want to invest a lot in an outfit you may not wear again or if you don't want to wear an old saree. Some of these sarees are so pretty that I'm dying to try them on even though wh... |
I came across this stunning silk bunting made from vintage sarees on one of the businesses listed on the directory. Ganesha is a fair trade shop that sells gorgeous gifts, accessories and bits for your house – but this bunting really stood out. I’m beginning to feel like I’m a bit bunting-ed out, the stuff is all over the wedding world, you feel like you won’t ever see an original piece of bunting and that it’s only ever floral or Cath Kidston-inspired. Then you stumble across bunting like this, which is not only made from vintage silk, but it’s also recycling an unloved p... |
On day 6 of the Cannes Film Festival Aishwarya Rai made an appearance in a gorgeous Sabyasachi saree for the premiere of the film Outrage and closed the saree vs. gown argument. Accompanied by eye candy hubby Abhishek Bachchan, with whom she indulged in plenty of PDA, Ash was a head-turner in a delicately embroidered Sabyasachi sari worn with forest green choli. She kept the accessories and makeup minimal making saree the focus of her look. Gotta say we love, love, love!!! ... |
Aishwarya Rai Bachhan was back on red carpet last evening for the “On Tour” Premiere during Cannes Film Festival looking stunning in a black glittery Armani Privé gown with Ferragamo black satin clutch. Love the red lips. What an upgrade from Day 1! Deepika Padukone didn’t do too bad either for her first appearance on the red carpet at the Cannes Film festival. Deepika showed off her curves in a white and gold saree by Rohit Bal which she paired with kundan earrings. A tad disappointed with the draping but gorgeous Deepika still made quite a few heads turn. Brings us back to the questi... |

At the Wills India Fashion Week last month, Rabani & Rakha presented a collection consisting of elegant saris and glamourous gowns. Net Sarees with sequined/embroidered underskirt and leopart print petticoats looked pretty. The color palette consisting of shades of salamon, teal, grey and blacks was understated yet interesting. Necklines were plunging; bejewelled blouses and cholis were tiny – yet the look was chic! ... |
The collections of exquisite saris, lehengas and dresses was everything you would expect from the label and the Bollywood stars on the ramp added to the glamour of the fabulous Satya Paul show on Women’s Day at Lakmé Fashion Week Summer/Resort 2010. The Sarees and Lehengas designed by Puneet Nanda in organza, voile, georgette, crepe, satin, net, chiffon and brocade had the right touches of embellishments as mirror work twinkled and chikan work and aari embroidery, sequins and prints. The showstopper bridal outfits were seen on Amruta Patki, Miss India Earth 2006, wearing a full gold and cry... |
